I had this vol. since i bought in fall of 1994, Had no idea its the only vol in the series thats out of print due to rights issues. I seen this thing going for $149.00 Wow. ok as far as the music on the disc, let me just say there are odd choices for this vol. Ok i grew up in philly listening to 98 WCAU -FM in 1982 when i was like 10 yrs old, and the only song i reconize on this vol from those days is pass the ducthie , which seems like a misplaced from this new wave song selction but it works however, but i never heard of alot of these songs. Some i got to know around 1993 listening a station called DRE that played classic new wave durning the 80's lunch hour. Like i know the valley girl josie cotton song from the movie being a big fan, and the DA DA DA DA song i never heard of, The other i came to know was haircut 100 song which seems to be an alternative version then what iam use too. O superman is an strange errie song i never heard of. and its werid its the full 8 minute version but rhino will chop a few seconds from other songs in their series, The paul carrack song is good but not new wave sounding enough. There is some ska stuff on here that kinda blows. And i never heard of X until i got vol. 6 . so i might have appreciated these songs on this vol alot more if i grew up in LA around 81 82. but i am not getting rid of it for the vaule collectors item feel to it now..
Uh, no. I found it somewhat nauseating when I found that the only disc that I still needed to have the entire Rhino NWHOT80's collection was an OOP rarity, but my mood elevated when I got a look at the song lineup. Would someone out there actually pay in the area of $50 for the privelege of owning such a below average lineup of songs? A friend recorded this disc from a library copy that he located and I can honestly say that NOTHING on the sought after disc 7 is even close to being worthy of the big asking price. Check your local library and judge for yourself, then treat yourself to the other volumes and call your collection complete.
Of the four or so of Rhino's "New Wave Hits" discs that I've bought so far, this one is probably my favorite (vol. 2 is a very close second). The entire series has a wonderful variety of new wave music, and at a good price. Yeah, its got that "da da da" song that's in that damn TV ad. And it covers the 80's nicely (about as well as you could do on a single CD), from slow Ska (Sampson and Delilah), to New Wave Surf (Party Weekend); from pure Wave (Favorite Shirts), to straight rock-punk (Blue Spark). Start with this disc, then buy vol. 2, then vol. 10, then .... And don't forget to check Rhino's "D.I.Y." series for pre-Wave stuff, and "Have A Nice Day" series for 70's cheesey-pop-music.
