| The twisted cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" is a statement of intent, while the cool jazz riffs from the band's trumpet player are part of what makes tracks like "Daria," "It's Coming Down," and "Frank Sinatra" so original. "The Distance" is a funked-up jam with a Chili Peppers chorus. --Jeff Bateman |

| This is a great CD from a great band- especially the cover on I will survive is brilliant. Cake is like the Thrills, Polarbears and the Beatles one of the few bands that sounds great and real. |
| I bought this CD for a friend. He only knew of one song on the disc. After listening to the entire album, he really likes it a lot. The packaging and speedy arrival was excellent for me |
This California band formed in 1994 and this is the fourth album they have released. It definitely sounds exactly what you would expect (if you're a Cake fan). In a short period of time they've established themselves in the rock world. Cake is a tad bit different from the overload of alternative/rock bands out there with the way they mix various genres of music such as rock, lounge, funk, blues, punk and hip-hop. They aren't afraid to experiment within their music abilities. It does contain lyrics that refer to sex throughout the CD, which might bother some, but I'm okay with it.
John McCrea sings, Greg Brown on the guitar, Vincent Di Fiore plays the trumpet here with Victor Damiani on bass guitar and finishing the line-up is Todd Roper pounding on the drums. The album did go platinum, achieving some success, which I believe was a result to two cover songs on the album, one being the disco hit "I Will Survive" which is quite entertaining. Other good songs on Fashion Nugget are "Friend is a four letter word" and "The Distance". So what do I think of this CD, in a word -- Yummy. |
| Best Cake CD Ever!!! The Distance is a great song. But, there are numerous songs on this album that make it worth owning. |
Containing the band's two best known songs, "Fashion Nugget" is the Cake album most likely to be in your CD wish list (short of an inevitable anthology). After the interesting Motorcade of Generosity, the songwriting took a sharper turn here. The result was the novel hit "The Distance," which is one of those songs that reminds me of the Butthole Surfers' "Cinnamon." It's probably better than anything this band has a right to have ever created.
After that, the deadly dry cover of "I Will Survive" is the kind of inside joke that actually has held its appeal in the 10 plus years since "Fashion Nugget" first hit the racks. The other cover, an English language rework of a Spanish hit "Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps," makes excellent use of Cake's bare bones ethic with the soloing trumpet riding on top of the melody. The final song, "Sad Songs and Waltzes," is probably the other really great piece of writing here...someone should beef up the arrangement and make a country weeper out of it.
The rest of "Fashion Nugget" pretty much follows the formula. Jazzy skeletal playing with the trumpet filling in for lead guitars. In addition to "The Distance," the obsession with race cars pops up twice more on "Race Car Ya Ya's" and "Stickshifts and Safety Belts." If you dig Cake's kind of style, "Fashion Nugget" will be the slice that most satisfies. |
