| It's a great looking watch, and you'd think it would be super durable given its association with the Navy Seals. However, looks and advertising are deceiving. Mine lasted about 14 months before it stopped working. Past the warranty cut-off, and not worth the cost to repair. It still looks good. Consider another brand sports watch.... |
This Luminox is a very good product.
Very good quality.
I am happy with it ! |
| I purchased THE LUMINOX Original Navy Seal Diver watch #3003 (blue face) for my son's 13th birthday... at his request. He is always outside building/working on things, hunting, camping etc. and is really rough on his belongings. This watch has been a parent's dream!!! My purchase was 3 years ago and I am now buying a new watch band for it(it deteriorated, a normal occurance with sweating etc.) BUT NOT COMPLAINING!!! Before this watch he went through 2-3 watches a year totaling more than the cost of the Luminox. You can see the numbers in the middle of the night without pushing a button or turning on a light....It is BRIGHT!!! From responsible youth to grandparents... I strongly recommend this watch. |
I purchased this watch in late 2003 just before I was deployed overseas with the US Army. I needed a durable watch that kept good time, was easily viewed at night without needing to press a button, yet was still nice-looking.
This Luminiox watch met all the criteria excellently. The tritium light sources on the hands, dial, and bezel remain bright and clear at night even after several years. Since the light is supplied by the radioactive decay of tritium (it is completely safe -- the tritium capsules contain the very weak radiation emitted by the tritium, and the watch body and crystal totally enclose the capsules. Even if the watch is completely destroyed and the capsules ruptured, the beta radiation emitted from tritium cannot penetrate human skin and poses essentially no risk.), the light emitted by the tritium lamps will slowly get dimmer over time. Tritium's half-life is about 12.36 years, meaning that the lamps will be half as bright after 12.36 years as when they were new. I believe the capsules can be replaced when they become too dim for normal use, but I haven't worn the watch long enough to deal with that issue.
One of my hobbies is recreational timekeeping (yes, I'm somewhat strange) and I have several radio-controlled clocks which are synchronized to NIST's WWVB radio station, a GPS-disciplined clock that's synced to within one microsecond of GPS time, and a GPS-disciplined rubidium atomic oscillator that provides accurate time within several hundred nanoseconds of GPS time to a local time server which distributes time to computers on my local network. The Luminox watch keeps excellent time -- I usually set it manually to one of my local time sources about every two weeks and it drifts by less than 5 seconds during that time interval (it's been exactly two weeks since I've last set it, and it's about 3 seconds fast).
The body of the watch is stainless steel, and the bezel is durable plastic. I'm unsure as to the material that makes up the crystal, but it has sustained years of service on my wrist in the military, and has only two barely-noticeable scratches.
While not a "thin" watch, it's not terribly bulky -- I believe that a Timex Ironman is slightly thicker with more protrusions; the Luminox watch is flat, with minimal protrusions. It has a modest heft to it, but is by no means heavy or awkward. I find it to be ideal in terms of size, thickness, and weight.
The wristband is a sort of black rubber/resin, and is extremely durable. My only complaint is that the band has a sort of dimpled pattern that collects dust, dirt, and grime and must be occasionally scrubbed out with an old toothbrush. Having an unpatterned, smooth band would be ideal in this regard.
The band is secure and stable. I've never had the band detach from the watch body, or the buckle ever fail in any way. A small keeper loop prevents the loose end of the band from flopping about. While the keeper usually stays put, it can occasionally move away from the end of the band and back toward the buckle, necessitating readjustment. Hardly a big deal.
Other than the bezel (which can only turn counterclockwise, useful for timing or diving), the watch has only one external control. A small knob protrudes from the right side of the body (it is protected from damage by stainless steel ridges that are part of the body) and must be unscrewed and then pulled out to adjust the time and calendar. I've never had the knob be inadvertently unscrewed or pulled out -- it's quite secure.
While certainly not a formal watch, the watch is quite good looking, and goes well with most semi-formal attire. It is discreet, not flashy or gaudy.
The battery is presently 4 years old, and I've noticed no signs of weakness, though I admittedly have not opened it up and tested it. Luminox claims their batteries are good for 4 years, and I may take it in to be serviced in the near future to ensure the battery is fresh.
I've been quite satisfied with this wristwatch. It's served me well for years, and with periodic servicing (on the order of every 5 years or so for a new battery) it should last a lifetime. |
I got this watch as a gift and after 3 years now continue to say that it's my favorite watch. I'm not ever going to be able to afford big-time watches like Tag, etc. But, for me, this watch is "special". I love the glow it puts off (without having to push a button to get it), it's been through the ringer and looks as good as the first day. The band just has a few scratches but has also been extremely durable.
Haven't had to purchase any others yet, although I'd like the black face version. But it seems possible, although definitely annoying, that the negative experience by one of the reviewers here was a fluke (I'd like to hope that anyway). My watch has been put through a lot and I continue to strap it on everyday and enjoy wearing it. |
